A REVIEW OF ‘A JOURNEY OF LETTERS’ BY BIRBHADRA KARKIDHOLI
REVIEW BY RAJNI CHHABRA
Birbhadra karkidholi , a reputed poet, story writer and a successful editor is a powerful signature in the literary world, not only of Sikkim, but on global level. A JOURNEY OF LETTERS, originally composed by him in Nepali with title AKSHARHAHRUKO YATRAAMA, is translated into English by Sh. M.B.Rai and renders him wider opening to reach integral part of world literature.
Poems of Birbhadra are enriched with his straightforwardness, sensibility, lofty thoughts, deep perception, treasure of ideas, philosophy and spiritualism. His communicative skills are mark worthy.
Poetry of Birbhadra is quintessence of his journey of life from lap of nature to urbane. He muses over environment, his yearning to dwell in natural surroundings and homesickness as well.
His deep association with his roots is beautifully depicted in his poem ‘SEEMS I HAVEN’T BEEN TO MY VILLAGE FOR LONG TIME’
Whether or not my village remembers me,
Even for a moment, that I can’t say
As for me, I often keep on remembering, because
Even today, my name is still in the village. ( PAGE 111)
Birbhadra is willing to stand any test in life and faces it with a positive bend of mind.
There is no denying the fact that
I like to be tried and tested
So examination is accepted.
( I LIKE TO BE TRIED AND TESTED) PAGE 95
His poetry symbolizes his unflinching attitude towards life situations.
No, we have not had our downfall
We have simply slipped down
From one point of the earth to the other. (LINE 5---8)
Who told us that we suffered defeat?
We have always held our head high.
With a bold face.(LINE 7—9)WHO TOLD YOU?
Pang of separation and pathos of mind is given vent profusely in his poems.
But, I’m in the same place , still seated
There are winds/scenes
Just like it used to be in the past. But
Not those moments. No they are not here.
Absolutely not.
(SEATED ON THE SAME BENCH)
His love and longing, emotional attachment for mountains is profoundly expressed in the lines
Presently, I am in love with the jet black
Rocky hill, and I am proud of it.
For everybody thinks that it is
Sheer impossible to be in love with a cliff.
But no one can love like a cliff does.
Others just can’t do it
Others don’t know about it.
(MATTERS OF LOVE)
His deep concern for environment is beautifully pen crafted in poem AFRAID OF THE LIGHT THAT WILL SHINE TOMORROW.
I’m not afraid of those rivers and seas
As of the hills and brooks.
I m fearing these streams and rivulets
And waterfalls
How will they surge tomorrow?
His craving for recognition of inner self finds way in his verse SEEMS I AM HIDDEN
His abundant love for nature and its powerful description takes us to the journey of natural scenario and has a picturesque effect; we start witnessing clouds, mists, high hills and mountains, the moon, the fireflies, heavy downpours , cluster of homes in villages , lush green lands and eye catching beauty of nature.
I especially enjoyed reading his poems
PERHAPS YOU WILL MISS ME WHEN I AM GONE,
I DON’T HAVE ANY PERSONAL GOD
DOES SHE KNOW?
Perpetually interacting with life and the world, he is a distinguished poet. I thank my stars that I chanced to meet him as a co participant in WORLD POETRY FESTIVAL , KOLKATA IN 2013 where he gifted me several poetry and story books penned by him. I wish him more glory and prosperity in literary world on global level.
